Microsoft Launches Xbox Gamepad Replacement Parts
Microsoft is making a significant move towards self-repair in the gaming industry by providing replacement parts for Xbox gamepads. This initiative includes downloadable instructions and tutorial videos, which will ultimately help gamers save money. The program applies to both standard Xbox Wireless Controller models and the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller.
The Microsoft Store offers replacement discs, sticks, buttons, covers and more to deal with problems from sticks catching on shoulders and more. In the past, you had to replace your gamepad entirely or rely on dangerous third-party fixes. Prices range from $24 for button kits to $60 for a circuit board and motor assembly unit. You can even replace the vibration motor for $35. Replacement cases are also available, but only in black and white.
According to Product Director Brad Rossetti, the program is already underway, so if you have broken Xbox controllers, now is the time to look into fixing them. It also appears that Microsoft is allowing other retailers to sell these replacement parts, such as self-repair gurus iFixit.
Microsoft isn’t the only gaming giant to allow DIY fixes recently. Sony’s DualSense Edge controller actually comes with replacement joystick modules, although the company doesn’t sell other parts through its online store. Nintendo doesn’t sell repair components for its controllers, but it will repair Joy-Cons for free if you suffer from the dreaded Joy-Con drift.
